Roma children are defended against discrimination by the Anti-Discrimination Centre Memorial. It is an independent non-governmental organization, belonging to the network of International Memorial. The focus of Memorial of St Petersburg is to overcome discrimination and segregation of Roma children in the schools in Russia. It has also reported on the issue of education and Roma children as part of the UN report on children, and participated in the alternative report on the European Framework Convention on Minority Rights.
Roma children have the right to quality education. Memorial and Save the Children Sweden Europe Programme aim to end the practice of segregation and discrimination of Roma children in schools. This is being done by advocating for policy changes with Russian authorities, both local and national; training of teachers in human rights; preparing educative programs on children’s rights and by developing school materials.
